The premier master of reciters and grammarians in Basra. Studied under Tabi'un in Makkah, Medina, Kufa, and Basra including Mujahid ibn Jabr, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, and Yahya ibn Ya'mur. His chain traces back to 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) from the Prophet ﷺ.
